Team India, who went to Zimbabwe to play a three-match ODI series, will be seen playing in this series under the guidance of VVS Laxman. National Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman will be India’s acting head coach on Zimbabwe. Head coach Rahul Dravid has been rested in view of the Asia Cup to be played in UAE from August 27. While Laxman will be the head coach of the team in the series against Zimbabwe, India Under-19 coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar will be seen as the batting coach of the Indian team. Team India’s batting coach Vikram Rathor and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey have also been given a break from the Zimbabwe tour. Both of them will now join the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2022.
India’s Under-19 team, led by Kanitkar, won the World Cup last year under the captaincy of Yash Dhul. On the Ireland tour, Sitanshu Kotak was the batting coach of the Hardik Pandya-led side and now Kanitkar will be on a tour with the senior team for the first time. Kotak will now oversee the Under-19 camp at the NCA in Bengaluru.
A senior BCCI official told InsideSport, “He has done a wonderful job with the U-19 team and that is why he has been given the responsibility for the Zimbabwe tour. It is good for both. The senior team will also benefit from Kanitkar’s expertise as many players have worked with him at the NCA. Apart from this, VVS Laxman will also be there. All the players have a very good rapport with VVS.”
While VVS Laxman will be the head coach of the team on the Zimbabwe tour, Hrishikesh Kanitkar will play the role of batting coach. Apart from these two, Sairaj Bahutule will be seen working as the bowling coach of the Indian team. The first match of the series between India and Zimbabwe will be played on August 18, while the other two matches will be played on August 20 and 22. Three matches will be played at Harare Sports Club. KL Rahul will be seen captaining the Indian team on the Zimbabwe tour.
